The lesson learned from Google's success is not just about divine product. It's about divine marketing.
In Everything I Know about Marketing I Learned from Google, I preach about 20 "Googley Lessons" that every marketer can learn from the Big G about how to better engage customers and prospects and grow your business.
Examples include "Test Everything" (Fail is not a 4-letter word!), "Altruism Sells" (Don't Be Evil, anyone?), and "Make Your Company a Great Story" (Goats mowing lawns?!?).
To be sure, not every one of these lessons are things that Google applies to its own marketing. In some cases, Google demonstrates them in other ways. For example, "Act Like Content" was inspired by how the ads on Google closely resemble the organic listings. And, "Tap the Wisdom of Crowds" speaks more to how the Google search algorithm works.
At the end of the day, though, the 20 lessons outlined in my book are exhibited by Google better than just about anyone. Add them all up and it's easy to understand why the Big G is so omnipresent and widely worshiped.
